Review: 王子看见二公主 (Prince & Princess 2)

In the past few weeks, my Mom had been watching this television show on the Talentvision channel so, I decided maybe I'll watch it too...except on my laptop with english subs. This show is called "王子看见二公主". The english title is called "Prince & Princess 2" although literal translation to the chinese title is "Prince sees Princess 2" (if I'm wrong correct me!) Unfortunately, it was only subbed up to episode six from doremii subs. Viikkis videos weren't working for me so I had to bear with my limited Mandarin and watch the rest of the series without English Subtitles.

Storyline (5/10)

At first when I did a little research on the show and its show ratings (although I really shouldn't look at the ratings haha) but to my surprise, the ratings were pretty low but I still took a chance to watch. So, the basic storyline is that there is a family of 3 sisters. The oldest one was the piano genius, the middle child was the soon to be fashion designer and the youngest was just the support role. The youngest did not have a large role. The middle child (Ku Ruo) is the hardest working within the family and is always sewing clothing for her oldest sister to wear at matchmaking dates. The problem is that in this family, the middle child is not loved by both parents since both parents paid most of their attention to the oldest daughter. Thus, Ku Ruo grew up to be a tom boy and always had to act tough towards everyone she was around because she had the tendency to feel inferior towards others. One day she meets a man named Huan Yu and the drama begins (Sorry, trying to make this not cheesy).

Anyways, back to talking about the storyline, the basic storyline was good in my opinion but later after almost halfway through the series, it seemed to have fallen through. One big set back was that Ku Ruo's best friend Xia Kuan (who liked Ku Ruo) just dissappeared without an explanation of what happened to him. What actually happened is that the actor of Xia Kuan (Ken Hung) was sent to the hospital because of an illness so he had to stop participating in the drama. Of course incidents like that happen but the problem is that the script did not mention what happened to him. Although it was of course not possible to know that Ken Hung had to leave the set for the series, they should have made adjustments to the script such that the audience does not get so confused as to why he left like that (Especially me, I really liked Xia Kuan and I was so mad that he was just gone for the whole series). Another thing I didn't like was the small storylines that were left unsolved. Basically that's when I started to lose interest in the show.

The qualities that DID keep me watching the show till the end was that most of the story was revolving around fashion design (and you know how much I love fashion designing). Another thing was that the family of the main character Ku Ruo, the problems within the family was what I thought was quite dramatic to a good point. I did not like the Mom at all for various reasons that I am not going to say for the readers that have not seen the drama series yet. The person acting as the Mom is a good actress though so I'll give her points on that.

Characters (7/10)

Okay so the character personalities were a lot better than the storyline. I will again just name about 4 or 5 characters. Well the main characters basically haha

Zhao Ku Rou (Played by: Annie Chen)

Ke Rou is the leading girl and is also the middle child of the family. Her character is not original but, I like how she has a black belt in Judo and kicks ass in any fight she’s involved in. =P As I mentioned before, she has a dream to become a Fashion Designer and even secretly took a design class without her family knowing that she wanted to get into fashion. Ke Rou always helps her family in need, working, sewing dresses for her older sister and even taking on the Loan Sharks when they go to her house to collect.

Ning Huan Yu (Dylan Kuo)

He is the lead male of this series. Huan Yu just returns from America after being graduated from university for five years. He initially wanted to return to take over the pawn shop his Guardian had owned. Unfortunately for him, he was met with arranged dating and being given the position of General Manager of a Fashion brand in which he has no knowledge of. He did not even know what “LV” meant! (For those who don’t know, LV stands for Louis Vuitton, a famous brand of clothing and accessories) Huan Yu has a very innocent and naïve which sometimes make him seem very childish. He always has snacks, instant noodles, small figurines or toys around him. His personal style that makes him who he is is his big red rimmed glasses that are very much out of style. Although without his glasses on and with the right clothes he hits a 9 on the hotness scale.

Zhao Mu Fan (Hong Zi Han)

She is the second lead and plays as Ku Ruo’s older sister. She is the talented pianist in the family and is considerably the ‘favourite’ of her parents. Her mother always takes her out to arranged dates to see if Mu Fan can marry into a rich family and always pays attention to Mu Fan letting Ku Ruo be neglected. Mu Fan although is very pretty and acts proper in front of her potential boyfriends, she is very messy and has never done any housework since she had been constantly spoiled by her parents.

Xia Kuan (Ken Hung)

He is Ku Ruo's best friend. Xia Kuan had grown up with the Zhao family but for most of his childhood, he always like Ku Ruo. He even bought Barbie dolls for her although he never gave them to her. He just let Ku Ruo think that he like Barbie dolls which gave the impression that he was homosexual. Xia Kuan's family teaches Judo for a living so he and Ku Ruo trained together. Xia Kuan does eventually confess to Ku Ruo but he suddenly disappears in the script. The actor, Ken Hung had to be taken to the hospital for an illness that he had just recovered from before filming and since he fell ill again, he had no choice but to stop acting for the show.Ken was not replaced with another actor and therefore was just left off with nothing happening between Xia Kuan and Ku Ruo

The overall rating I would give the show is a 6/10. I think that what they had in the beginning of the series was very good but since they did not handle the unexpected leaving of Ken well, the series started to flop and in my opinion, it flopped big time. I'm sure the series would of been pretty good if they handled the situation better. Or if they replaced Ken with another actor it would of been good. Of course, I'd be mad that they replaced him but they should at least kept trying to have the original story going. I wouldn't be as mad. =]
